The Talented Mr Ripley

I've been preparing the next film-literary corner. I've read an upper-intermediate version of the Patricia Highsmith's book and I have seen the film (1999). Given I found some differences in the story, I also borrowed the original book at le library because I didn't know if the graded version was simplified. I looked for the murder part and I checked that the movie is different.

January racó de conversa

The conversation corner in January was very interesting. Joan, our moderator, proposed us talking about famous actors from different decades and also discuss the prototypes of beauty and their changes over time.

Talking about handsome men is fun. By chance we were all girls, in the same group there were also my classmates Isabel, Cristina and Judith.

Being Frank

I'm a crime novel reader in my my mother tongue. My experience with Playback has encouraged me to read another story that I didn't find interesting when I saw it on the download list.

Being Frank, by Ian Rankin, is a very short story of the detective John Rebus. It has many words that I had already seen in the previous story.

To learn better, I do two readings. First I read the text and look up the words in the dictionary. The electronic book is a great invention, I can underline the words and use the dictionary while I read.

When I have finished the book and I understand the plot well, I make a second reading following the rhythm of the audiobook.

Playback by Ian Rankin

I have read Playback, by Ian Rankin, a short book for pre-intermediate level students. The story is about a murder investigation of detective John Rebus from Edinburgh.

I love reading and last year I have read two novels by Ian Rankin in Spanish: Knots and Crosses (Nudos y cruces ) and Hide and Seek (El escondite). I thought I'm not qualified to follow the saga in English yet and I'm right. Text has a lot of new words for me. Anyway, I liked it and  it has been interesting.

Hard words:
to flee, tenement, to yell, grimy, guilty, to knock down, dented, bumper, glimpse, tart up, stuckconstable, lass, sharp, to nod, tinge, to notice, to frown, to stab, to realise, tidy, rack, ashtray, clutter, to ransack, wholesale, struggle, to stack, draining-board, spot, crockery, dishtowel, damp, smudge, gravy, drawer, amidst, bladedto chop, gleaming, hint, giggle, to wind back, idle, rousing, tear, sagging, sob, throat, ash, broguesbelongings

organiser, stabbed, stubbed, tucked, disorientated, ransacked, slouching, neurotically, eyrie, dribbling, cricketer, ignoring, indexed, implicated, sceptical, sprawled, detected, bladed, bolted, wastepaper, hoarder, brushed, salubriou mumbled, callously, boasting, cheque, haggis

The Nightmare Before Christmas

This holidays  I have watched (again) The Nightmare Before Christmas by Tim Burton. I watched  this movie with my husband in January of 1994, on our first date. That's was 25 years ago! We met at the Faculty of Fine Arts, we were classmates, and we've been together since then. I'm not a big fan of Tim Burton's films, but I agreed to go to the cinema because I liked him. We are lucky that our first movie was so beautiful 😍
